Personally, I found that sleeping with at least some part of my skin directly on the sheet, like my legs or feet, worked best. I apply the same approach when using grounding mats during the day, whether I’m watching TV, reading, or working at my desk. Making sure there’s skin contact seems to make a noticeable difference.

Some people prefer to sleep in minimal clothing to maximize contact. It’s about finding what’s comfortable and effective for you. You don’t need to be completely bare, but direct skin contact is the general recommendation for optimal results.

Sheets & Mats vs. Other Grounding Ways

Grounding sheets and mats aren’t the only ways to connect with the Earth. The most natural method, of course, is going barefoot outdoors on grass, soil, or sand. So why did I choose sheets and mats?

For me, it came down to convenience and consistency. Living a busy life, and not always having easy access to a safe, clean outdoor space to walk barefoot (especially in certain seasons!), meant that grounding during sleep was the most practical solution. I’m already spending 7-8 hours in bed, so why not make that time work for me? It integrates seamlessly into my daily routine. The same goes for mats.

It’s worth doing a bit of research to find a reputable product. Ensure the product has a secure connection point for the grounding cord and that the cord itself is in good condition.

Also, make sure you’re connecting it correctly to a properly grounded outlet. Most modern homes in the U.S. have grounded outlets, but if you’re in an older home, it’s a good idea to check. You can get a simple outlet checker at a hardware store.

Are there any odd sensations? I didn’t experience anything negative. Some people report a slight tingling sensation initially, which usually dissipates. And, of course, it’s important to remember that they are not a medical device and shouldn’t be seen as a cure for any specific health condition. They are a wellness tool. If you have health concerns, always talk to your doctor.

The Verdict: Are Grounding Sheets & Mats Worth It?

After two full years of sleeping and living grounded, what’s my final take? For me, it has been absolutely worth it. The improvement in my sleep quality alone has made a significant difference in my overall well-being, my energy levels, and even my mood. 

This positive experience has actually spurred me on to continue documenting the broader impact, not just of the sheets, but also grounding shoes when I’m walking the dog and other groudning products.
